Mal Wood
FOUNDING DIRECTOR
Mal Wood is the founder and former owner of Mal Wood Foundry, which provided high-quality bronze casting services to artists across Australia for over 30 years. He specialises in lost-wax casting and bronze sculpture for public art, and has guided artists from concept through to casting, installation, and completion.
After three decades running a commercial foundry, Mal stepped away from the business to focus on work that reflects his values — giving back to the community, sharing skills, and supporting artists to lead their own creative and cultural outcomes. He was increasingly aware of the lack of Indigenous-led public art in civic spaces, and of the barriers many Aboriginal artists face in accessing large-scale sculpture and durable materials.
On Country Public Art grew from a desire to help change that: to support First Nations artists to work within their own visual language, build sculptural skills, and see their stories represented in public places in meaningful, lasting ways.
Mal’s work is grounded in collaboration, technical excellence, and a strong commitment to artist-led and culturally respectful practice.
